Summary: Study density and viscosity properties of oil in order to learn about oil spills and how to clean them up!

Students will observe that the density and viscosity of oil are different from those of water. Then, students will have the chance to investigate how a variety of materials are affected by an oil spill. They will use their observations to brainstorm and discuss ways to clean up an oil spill.

Note: The oil can get messy. The educator can decide whether they want the materials investigation to be completely hands-on (students apply oil to the objects) or partially demonstration (the presenters apply oil to the objects).
